Things You Need to Know About Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is when an individual has persistent problems obtaining an erection and/or maintaining it. Erectile dysfunction without medication can make sexual intercourse difficult. According to the Massachusetts Male Aging Survey on sexual dysfunction, erectile dysfunction may first occur in an individual as early as 40 years. Researchers also found that erectile dysfunction affects an additional 18 to 30 million people.

Symptoms of erectile dysfunction include erections that are too tender for sexual intercourse, short-lived erections, and erection loss. People who are unable to have or sustain an erection are known to have erectile dysfunction at least 75% of the time they try to have sex.

Risk Factors

Sexual dysfunction as men age is more common. According to the Massachusetts Male Aging Survey, approximately 40% of men experience a degree of failure to have or maintain an erection at 40 years of age compared to 70% of men at 70 years of age. And the number of people with erectile dysfunction rises as age increases from 40 to 70 years from 5 percent to 15 percent. It is possible to treat erectile dysfunction at any age.

How it Happens?

An erection occurs when blood fills two chambers in the penis (known as the cavernosa corpora). This causes the penis to grow and stiffen as it is filled with water, much like a balloon. The cycle is activated by brain and vaginal nerve impulses. Anything that interferes with these urges or reduces the flow of blood to the penis will lead to erectile dysfunction.

Lifestyle Changes for Erectile Dysfunction

Lifestyle choices such as smoking, alcohol abuse, and obesity can affect the circulation of the blood and cause erectile dysfunction. Smoking, excessive drinking and abuse of drugs can destroy the blood vessels and reduce the flow of blood into the penis. Smoking makes people even more vulnerable to erectile dysfunction and atherosclerosis. Compared to non-smokers, smokers are at about double the risk of erectile dysfunction. Something leading to erectile dysfunction being overweight and having too little exercise. People who exercise regularly have a reduced risk of erectile dysfunction. There are also medications and male enhancement pills that can help you raise your sword.
